Hello friends,
Today we had a gentleman, his daughter and son come in to get some magic from us. The boy who was about 10 years old was wearing a Twisted Sister Tee Shirt. I was going to comment on his good taste in music but I didn't get the chance as I am trying to finish up another client. Not two minutes after they arrived, another family walks into the shop.
As I am finishing ringing up a sale from another client. I am staring at this man out of the corner of my eye, saying to my self, "Is that, Dee Snider? I think it’s him." But I am not sure yet because his back is to me and his hair is in a pony tail. Then I see his wife whom I remember see on a fairly recent MTV or VH-1 special. I look at their children and then I know for sure. I am fairly certain Dee Snider has graced our presence several times before but he had looked different on past visits for some reason. Not wanting to embarass myself, I don't say anything. But this time I know for sure. It's Dee Snider.
Mr. Snider notices the boy's TS shirt and says something to him about it. The boy looked up in awe at a smirking Snider.
If I had any time to think, I would have asked Mr. Snider to participate in an impromtu illusion and make him appear in front of the boy. But Snider's confrontaion with him was just as impressive.
What I am actually thinking is that it is more unusual to see a 10 year old wearing a shirt from a 1982 record in 2006 than it is to see Dee Snider in the store. But to see them both at the same time, is more than ironic.
In my excitement to start helping this icon, I somehow knock over a rack tricks. First a small section goes and I am relived. No biggie. Then bam, the whole thing tumbles down. 100’s and 100's of novelties. I’ll be re displaying them for the next week.
The floor is covered in merchandise. There is no room to walk. Mrs. Snider and their son & daughter are on there hands and knees helping me stuff everything into bags just to get it off the floor. I feel really bad. "Please, no it’s okay. I’ll do it. Don’t worry about it." They are still helping. No really please. But they just keep helping. I thank them for helping and start to help their son get supplies for a movie he is making.
Who is Dee Snider you ask? You are joking right? Dee Snider, front man for metal bands Twisted Sister & Widowmaker, writer/director, actor motion picture Strangeland, radio DJ, one time MTV Metal DJ and one time Board of Directors for Cadaco Company and more.
Go to www.deesnider.com and www.twistedsister.com for everything you need to know.
During Snider's time with Cadco he wanted to focus on family entertainment so he produces the 1995 Off-Broadway show Magic On Broadway with Joseph Gabriel and released the Joseph Gabriel magic sets. Gabriel is magnificent performer. He has a very powerful and beautiful bird act and he is also a fine illusionist. The show was wonderful and I had seen it three times.
Today, Dee Snider said the show had closed because David Copperfield had come to town. Gabriel reloacted to Vegas to open a new show. One of our employees Joey Zee made the move to Vegas to be a part of that show but wound up working on Melinda - The First Lady of Magic instead.
Now back To Mr. Snider. I go way back with Twisted Sister. There was a local bar they used to play in Tuey's before they were famous. Some friends and I, who were a couple of years too young to get in the bar but at the right age to know good music, would hang around in the parking lot just to steal a listen. About three years later Twisted Sisiter would become huge. In one show I saw, they shared a double bill with DIO and filled the Nassau Coliseum. This was a great show and I remember it like it was yesterday. Some very stupid people were lighting and throwing M-80s or blockbusters in the Coliseum. It was a scary experience as my friends and I are not far from the target zone. Dee Snider gets on the mic an in a commanding voice, tells whoever it is doing it to stop or he will take those M-80s and ***** them up ***** ***. Surprisingly, it really does stop and we all enjoy a great show except my friend MIke who gets escorted from the building for climbing up the speaker towers.
TS's best album? Under The Blade of course. First released in the UK and only avaialable in the US as an import. Strange since they are a Long Island band. The album was finally realeased in the US with an additional tracks but only after they hit it big.
Snider's best public accomplishment? Standing up for free speech and ripping apart the PMRC in a calm but firm and intelligent way. His responses to their questions and comments were done with the percision of an experianced public speaker. They thought they would have a dirt bag on the rails and get answers like "Duh, I don't know." The PMRC got hit hard and they were made to look very foolish. Chalk one up for the metal heads and oh yeah don't forget free speech.
Dee Snider's impact on pop culture has also leaked into the magic world in another way, a magic trick sort of gets named after his band.
John Bannon releases an effect called Twister Sisters. If you don't have one, you should it is a killer self-working card/mentalism routine. We always have them in stock.
Mr. Snider is not the first celebrity (outside of magic) to stop here for a visit. But after all this time, I guess I still get a little start struck.
We even sell him. Well his costume anyway. Remember Halloween is coming soon. If you want to rock, be Dee Snider. We've got the outfit, wig & make-up set.
Sorry I am unable to provide you links to anything today, there is something wrong with the Blogger. It won't let me do it.
Until next time.
